What Are Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)?

India wants to have a lot of power from things that're not fossil fuels by 2030. They want to get 500 GW of this kind of power. This is a big goal. It depends on something important that people often forget about. This thing is called Battery Energy Storage Systems or BESS for short. Solar panels make energy from the sun.. It is the Battery Energy Storage Systems that make this energy really useful. The BESS helps make sure we have power when we need it. It does not matter if the sun is shining or not. The Battery Energy Storage Systems make clean power available all the time, twenty four hours a day. Indias goal of 500 GW of -fossil fuel capacity, by 2030 really needs Battery Energy Storage Systems to work.

BESS is a core growth area for Grace BESS and a natural extension of our deep expertise in advanced power electronics & conversion. We are in a position to supply the core technology, the power brains, that make these systems reliable, efficient and grid-compliant.

Battery Energy Storage Systems

Why Energy Storage is Non-Negotiable: The Intermittency Problem?

Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are not always available. They only make power when the weather is good. This is an issue with renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Renewable energy sources, like solar and wind do not work all the time. This creates a lot of volatility in the national power grid. For instance, the demand for electricity is generally the highest in the early evening (the “peak hours”), when the solar generation is zero (the “duck curve” phenomenon).

Without massive, scalable storage solutions, India will not be able to add gigawatts of renewable energy without risking grid instability, fluctuations, and potential black outs.

BESS addresses this fundamental challenge by doing two things:

Time-Shift Energy:

During the maximum solar generation and low cost electricity period, BESS stores the surplus energy. It then releases this stored power at the time of greatest evening demand, stabilizing the grid and eliminating the need for polluting “peaker plants” (normally fossil fuel)

Supplementary Services Grid:

BESS can respond within milliseconds to frequency deviations , voltage sags , or sudden load changes and provide instant VARs and frequency regulation , which are essential to grid stability .

Core Technology: Power Conversion System (PCS):

It’s a lot more complicated than just putting batteries together to have a BESS installation. The Power Conversion System (PCS) is the main high-tech element controlling the whole operation.

The PCS is the bidirectional inverter, which is the smart interface between the DC battery bank and the AC power grid. The brain decides when to charge, when to discharge, and to keep in perfect sync with the phase and frequency of the grid.

Grace BESS’s strategic focus is to master and manufacture these critical components:

  • Bidirectional Inversion : The PCS must efficiently invert AC power from the grid to DC power for charging the battery, and DC power from the battery to high quality AC power for injection into the grid. With our expertise you can minimise conversion losses and get high efficiency of operation.
  • Modular Architecture : Our PCS solutions are modular and scalable from small commercial units to large multi-megawatt utility scale installations, offering flexible deployment for a variety of applications.
  • Grid Compliance & Safety : Our systems are compliant with national and international grid codes, and have islanding detection and fault management capabilities which are critical to the safety of operators and the protection of assets.
  • Market Growth and Policy Tailwinds : The Indian government has declared BESS as critical infrastructure and is providing policy support to kick-start the market
The government has cleared a Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme to facilitate deployment of 4,000 MWh of BESS capacity by 2030, with preference to projects that serve the needs of the transmission utility. This makes the investment bankable for early stage projects.
  • Mandatory Renewable Purchase Obligation with Storage : State utilities must now buy a percentage of power from renewable sources that include storage. This ensures long-term contracts for BESS operators.
Such policies, along with the drop, in lithium-ion battery costs helped BESS grow rapidly.

Grace as a Leader in Green Energy:

Grace BESS is not just a player, we are a strategic enabler in the BESS ecosystem.” We use our manufacturing strength and R&D focus to create the most complex and value-added components:

  • Local Manufacturing : We are using the PLI (Production Linked Incentive) schemes to boost the domestic content and reliability of our PCS and BESS components in line with the nation’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission.
  • Modular & Scalable Design : Our BESS solutions are designed for rapid deployment and easy integration into existing infrastructure, a necessity for a country with diverse grid requirements.
  • Integrated EV-BESS Solutions : We are uniquely positioned to offer integrated battery charging and battery storage solutions, ensuring maximum efficiency and reliability at high power EV charging sites.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, BESS is the technology that solves the energy puzzle, taking intermittent sunlight and wind and turning it into reliable, dispatchable power. Grace Renewable Energy is dedicated to being the power electronics pioneer to enable the intelligence and reliability needed to develop this resilient, 24/7 clean energy grid.
